TRON: Legacy - Movie Review

Movie Review:

TRON: Legacy

Tron: Legacy is a good movie that has amazing moments and is beautiful to see, but it falls short of being a great film.

We went to see the film with pre-conceived ideas and high expectations.
It is a good movie, but not a great one. It will entertain, but it is not what most people will expect. The visuals are stunning, but the plot is weak, which is something that will likely sound familiar to some people who also went to see big 3D experience, Avatar. In fact, both films even opened on the same weekend. Like Avatar, Tron: Legacy will divide people's opinions. But even at its best, Tron: Legacy is not the film that Avatar was. There was just something missing...

Synopsis:

Tron: Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski; written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz; screenplay by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Brian Klugman; story by Lee Sternthal; cast by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird; starring Jeff Bridges, Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Running time: 2hrs.7min.

The Movie tells the story of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hudlund), the orphaned son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a computer visionary and CEO that disappeared 20 years earlier after claiming to have witnessed a miracle that would change the world. Over the years everyone, including Sam, begins to suspect that his father had simply ran away. Feeling bitter, Sam continues to avoid responsibility as the primary shareholder of the global corporation Encom, and spends his time rebelling against his heritage.
One day, Kevin’s old friend, and Sam’s sometimes surrogate father Alan (Bruce Boxleitner, who played the role of Alan/Tron in the original film), tells Sam that he has received a message from Kevin’s old arcade (which was featured in the first film), even though the place had been abandoned for years. Despite his skepticism, Sam goes to the arcade and there he discovers a secret room with a laser computer– which was also unknown to him– capable of transforming people into digital beings and transporting them into a new world.
Sam suddenly finds himself in a digital world called "the Grid", where he is considered to be a rogue program and therefore is captured. As events unfold, Sam is revealed to be an user rather than a program, and is brought before the leader of the Grid who looks like his father (some CGI trickery makes Bridges appear 20 years younger). Sam soon realizes that this man is not his dad, but Clu 2, a program designed by Kevin Flynn to help create the perfect system. Clu has plans of his own, and they involve the death of both Sam and his father as a means to achieving something much bigger and darker.
Sam is rescued by the beautiful and mysterious Quorra (Olivia Wilde), who takes him to see his real father. Kevin explains how he created this world and reconciles with his son. Following the reunion, Sam and Kevin try escaping, but soon they find out Clu poses a much greater threat than initially expected, and that the real world is in danger.

Pros:

Tron: Legacy takes one step further regarding the future of special effects and visually it is one of the best movies ever made. Solid performances by the actors. Daft Punk kills it.

Cons:

A plot that has gaping holes. The CGI technology that makes Bridges look younger is weird. The world into which the characters move around feels empty.

Conclusion:
Despite of a weak plot, the movie has action and excellent effects, so we suggest you to watch it.
